Thesis and Internships

General Information

INVEMAR encourages scientific research and supports training, in coordination with educational institutions, opening the doors to the academic community. The Academic Coordination (CAI) Acronym in Spanish, under the framework of the human management process, is especially responsible for regulating the enrollment of students.

 

INVEMAR enrolls students in four (4) categories:

Thesis Students

Intern Students
Visiting Students
SENA Students:
The Human Resources Department enrolls this type of students.

 

Description of each category:

 

Thesis Students

Undergraduate or graduate students that develop their final projects inside an activity or a research project in the Institute. They sign an academic and scientific cooperation agreement.

 

Type 1: Enrolled into a specific research project. They receive a forgivable loan scholarship in the following considerations: Undergraduate students, the amount equivalent to one (1) current monthly minimum salary; Master students, two (2) current monthly minimum salaries; Doctorate students, three (3) current monthly minimum salaries.

Type 2: Enrolled into an activity of a research program. They receive institutional support, totally or partially, for the development of their final academic project (thesis or dissertation) such as: advice, use of equipment, inputs, field trips, data, etc.  These students have financial support from other entities and do not receive funding in terms of money from INVEMAR.

Type 3: Workers from INVEMAR with a special scholarship. This type of enrolment is managed by the Human Resources Department.

 

Interns 

Undergraduate or graduate students who carry out their internship applying basic knowledge of their profession in specific activities developed in the Institute. Internships can last up to six months with the possibility of one extension. These students sign an enrollment agreement document.

 

Interns in professional practice: Students who develop training with special emphasis in the learning and preparation process, seeking the attainment of useful skills to be develop in a professional or technical career.

 

Interns in research practice: Students who participate as research assistants in an activity of the Institute. This type of internship is a mechanism to promote training in researchers, it also allows the student to propose and develop his own research work. In addition, students can participate in activities that go beyond the formal academic process and stimulate the acquisition of investigative skills, demonstrated in academic products such as: elaboration of state of art, complete review of bibliography for publication purposes, publication of articles, and participation in seminars, among others. These students must submit a copy of their final document to CAI at the end of their academic stay.

 

Visiting students

Visiting students need a particular support from INVEMAR for the accomplishment of some academic activity (including some component in their final project), for example: review of biological collections, expert advice, field trips, use of facilities, among others. The visitor cannot stay more than fifteen (15) business days. If the student requires longer time, he or she will have to start a new process.

 

 

Requirements to be enrolled as student at INVEMAR

Those who wish to be part of INVEMAR as intern, thesis or visiting students must meet the following requirements:

 

  • Students can be selected through enrolment calls or directly by a Program, Group or Office and the Academic Coordination.

  • Submit all documents described below in each category (if applies)

 

Thesis Students

  • Curriculum Vitale (CV)
  • Photocopy of Identification Document (ID).
  • Photocopy of documents supporting academic background and students profile request (students profile request only applies for enrolment calls).
  • Letter of intent, explaining his or her motivation and purpose to be enrolled at INVEMAR.
  • Letter of presentation and recommendation summited by the academic institution where the student is currently registered or entity that supports him/her.
  • Unofficial Transcripts (academic history).
  • Brief summary of the final project or thesis.
  • Certification of health insurance
  • Certification of life and accident insurance (University insurance)
  • Diving certification card and insurance (Applies only if diving activities are planned).
  • Height training certification form an accredited entity for activities performed over 1.50 meters (Applies only if height activities are planned).
  •  For type 1 thesis students, a photocopy of the Tax Payer Identification Certificate (RUT, Acronym in Spanish) for a policy subscription that protects the fulfillment of the commitments acquired by the student.

Note: The cost of the policy will be assumed by the student, as well as that the extensions requested and granted.

 

 

Intern Students

  • Curriculum Vitale (CV)
  • Photocopy of Identification Document (ID).
  • Photocopy of documents supporting academic background and students profile request (students profile request only applies for enrolment calls).
  • Letter of intent, explaining his or her motivation and purpose to be enrolled at INVEMAR.
  • Letter of presentation and recommendation summited by the academic institution where the student is currently registered or entity that supports him/her.
  • Unofficial Transcripts.
  • Certification of health insurance, (EPS, Acronym in Spanish).
  • Certification of life and accident insurance (University insurance).
  • Diving certification card and insurance (applies only if diving activities are planned).
  • Height training certification form an accredited entity for activities above 1.50 meters (applies only if height activities are planned).

 

Visiting Students

  • Letter of presentation and recommendation summited by the academic institution where the student is currently registered or entity that supports him/her.

NOTA: Además, se podrán solicitar documentos adicionales de acuerdo a las necesidades del programa o dependencia.

 

Foreign students

In addition to the previous documents according to the type of enrolment, foreign students must submit the following documents:

 

  • Passport.
  • Student VISA or temporary student permit, according to the Colombian law.
  • Certification of life and accident insurance (travel insurance). The life and accident insurance must be presented in Spanish or English languages and preferably translated by the Colombian embassy from the origin country. It is recommended to provide the clinic or hospital information where the student can be attended, in case of an emergency.

 

NOTE: It is recommended that the insurance company has a business office in Colombia, for communication purposes, in case of an emergency.

 

Academic or institutional visits

Any academic institution that wants to visit INVEMAR must provide an official request explaining the purpose of the visit. The visit must be authorized by the General Director or by the Deputy Scientific Director. Academic or institutional visits will be coordinated by the Academic Coordination. The institution must provide a list of all visitors with the following information:

  • Full names.
  • Identification number.
  • Identification Document.
  • Status: students, teacher.
  • Insurance Health Company.
