Marine and Coastal Geoscience Research Program – GEO Marine and Coastal Geoscience Research Program – GEO

Marine and Coastal Geoscience Research Program

The program aims to study oceanic physical forces to understand the interrelationships between ecosystems and the marine environment. Oceanography, climatology, coastal vulnerability, geochemistry, ocean acidification, geomorphology among other areas, frame research activities with the community.  Development of basic and applied research carried out by GEO with high technology instruments contributes to the timely and effective knowledge of the seas and coasts, as well as the efficient management of its resources.

In the short term, the GEO Program will be consolidate as a team of researchers competent in the research of the physical, marine and coastal processes. It will support the territorial entities in their development plans and will provide to the other institutional programs, the physical information required for their research activities.

Research Lines and Laboratories

Marine and Coastal Geology Research Line - GMC

It studies the physical processes related to the environment of the soil and the sub-bottom of the continental and insular coastal zone to the submerged areas of the Colombian seas.

Oceanography and Climate Research Line - OCC

It studies the ocean and its complex connections with the atmosphere, the coastal zone, the ice, seabed, the biotic and chemical component. It also studies the influence of these processes on the productive activities of the country's coastal and marine areas.

Marine Instrumentation Laboratory

It supports the collect of information in field of the research programs of INVEMAR. It has the Marine Instrumentation area where it coordinates the acquisition, use and maintenance of the Institute's marine instrumentation, ensuring the optimal state and availability of the research equipment. The area of sedimentology offers different services of analysis in marine sediments. Learn more
