Coordination of Scientific Services
Baseline Study
Baseline characterizations are used to model possible impacts of future projects, allowing environmental specialists to provide timely information required for project designs, thereby reducing negative environmental impacts. This in turn results in sustainable projects socially and environmentally and increases the efficiency of the process of obtaining permits.
The baseline studies developed by the Coordination consist on characterizations of the physical, chemical (oceanography, geology, marine chemistry and physics) and biotic (fauna and flora: inventories, mapping, sensing, etc.) context of marine and coastal ecosystems. Generally, this type of studies are used as an input for the preparation of Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) and Management Plans (MP), required by the National Authority of Environmental Licenses (ANLA, in Spanish) before a development project is started.
INVEMAR and its Coordination of Scientific Services have extensive experience in obtaining information in the Colombian seas, in both coastal and oceanic environments. The following are the different baseline projects in which we have participated:
- First phase of the establishment of the environmental baseline monitoring plan of the project for the treatment and final disposal of wastewater of Cartagena de Indias. (ACUACAR S.A. E.S.P.2002 – 2004)
- Climatological, Oceanographic and biotic characterization of the area of interest for exploratory drilling Tayrona. (PETROBRAS COLOMBIA LTD. 2006)
- Technical, biophysical, oceanographic, topographic and design studies for the construction of the landing dock on the Natural Regional Park Johnny Cay, San Andres Island. (CORALINA, 2006 – 2007)
- Geological, physical and chemical characterization of the area of influence of the construction project of the Complejo Portuario, Industrial de Buenaventura (CPIBSA), multipurpose port located in Estero Aguacate of the Municipality of Buenaventura (COMPLEJO PORTUARIO, INDUSTRIAL DE BUENAVENTURA S.A. (CPIBSA, 2007).
- Terrestrial and marine biotic and water quality baseline of the Area of Influence of Phase II of the Project GACE. (CHEVRON PETROLEUM COMPANY, 2007).
- Collecting physical and biotic information for the baseline profile of the RC4 and RC5 blocks in the Colombian Caribbean. (BP EXPLORATION COLOMBIA LTD., 2008).
- Survey of physical and biological information as input to the environmental impact study of exploratory drilling activity in Fuerte Sur, Fuerte Norte, Talus and Carpintero polygons in the Colombian Caribbean. (ECOPETROL S.A., 2010).
- Physical, biotic and fishing information of the area of exploratory interest Jarara (Tayrona block, Colombian Caribbean). (RELIANCE EXPLORATION AND PRODUCTION DMCC SUSURSAL COLOMBIA, 2011).
- Environmental characterization of the area of construction of a natural gas liquefying plant (LNG) in the Gulf of Morrosquillo. (PACIFIC RUBIALES ENERGY, 2001- 2012).
- Environmental characterization before the exploratory drilling of the Molusco well, block RC9, Colombian Caribbean (GEOCOL, 2014 -2015).
