Monitoring or follow-up studies

Environmental monitoring is defined as the observation of the behavior of atmospheric, geological, hydrological or biological factors in time. The intention of these type of studies is to reveal environmental patterns and variations over time in order to secure the environmental success of development projects and the  compliance to objectives.

The frequency of sampling of a monitoring program should be determined by the use of information which should allow the organization of observations in time.

The Coordination of Scientific Services have done monitoring studies for the implementation of development projects in marine areas to evaluate the evolution of environmental impacts. Other studies of this type had been done to evaluate the success of mitigation measures implemented for specific activities

Among the studies of this type, CSC has done the monitoring of impacts for seismic exploration, drilling exploratory wells, laying of submarine pipelines, facilities in coastal areas, some examples are:

  • Monitoring of physical-chemical parameters and macrozoobenthic communities in the area of influence of the monobuoy and submarine line of the Terminal Pozos Colorados (Santa Marta). (ECOPETROL, 1994-1997)
  • Monitoring of the macrobenthic fauna of the area of influence of the process of construction of the submarine line and the TLU2 in the Gulf of Morrosquillo. (Oleoducto Central S.A. (OCENSA), 1996-1997).
  • Monitoring of fauna associated to red mangroves roots of in the area of influence of the underwater line in the Gulf of Morrosquillo. (Oleoducto Central S.A. (OCENSA), 1996- 1997).
  • Follow-up and monitoring plan of the delta estuarine zone of the Sinu River (Urrá S.A. E.S.P., 2000- 2014).
  • Monitoring of the marine waters of the bay of Santa Marta (SOCIEDAD PORTUARIA DE SANTA MARTA, 2003).
  • Monitoring of coral reefs in the Gulf of Morrosquillo. (ECOPETROL, 2005).
  • Environmental monitoring of an industrial area of Mamonal in Cartagena Bay. (ARAÚJO IBARRA S.A, 2007-2008).
  • Monitoring of marine ecosystems of Bahía Portete (Puerto Bolivar). (CERREJÓN, 2009- 2010).
